The best thing to do is to take a look at the jobs we currently have listed to get a good idea of the types of jobs we have here. After that, it's a matter of deciding what you think you would most like to do.

Education is important ,but so is talent, so work on both. Our employment page has a listing of our current jobs available as well as some basic tips.

The consensus seemed to be that if really large numbers of men were sent to storm the mountain, then enough might survive the rocks to take the citadel.

Neth!! Shhh!
What if the boy looks at that page and your comments then dedicates himself for the next 3 years only to be turned away?
He'd be devastated and likely blame you.

As someone that frequently turns away people that spend years thinking they are good at something (Gallery Owner), I can tell you that planning that far ahead can be set you up for failure. I can also say that some art school teachers should be more careful what they tell their most talented students.

OP, I would suggest trying out game design, but not focusing on working at a single company.
Look for an intern position this summer, find a documentary about working at a game company or try writing a developer and asking him some questions via email.

Also remember that there are plenty of wonderful gaming studios other than Blizzard, don't get discouraged if they decide you are not ready, there might be others other there that think you are.

It took me 11 years from the time I first thought, "It would be cool to work for Blizzard." So given that fact, I tend to not want to discourage people though my path here was a bit convoluted and unexpected, but came with plenty of hard work as well. It was the right time and right opportunity for me which was nearly two years ago now. I should have added, experience into the mix of education and talent though, that is true.

And you still ended up with a crappy, thankless job.

I actually ended up with my dream job. It may not be your idea of one, but it is mine. ;)

Q u o t e:

Can I ask what kind of relevant work experience you had before you were able to grab a job at Blizzard?
I'm curious what kind of education->work path leads to a CM job.

The most I can say is I've been involved in the industry for many years in one aspect or another. I worked hard, networked, and kept learning. In general, Community Teams have a variety of backgrounds from support, writing, game development, and more.

My job does entail more than what people see on the forums, but we've said this all in the past as well.

Mind enlightening us?

So far my list is:
1. Reading forums and answering some questions.
2. Reading forums and compiling community feedback to give to Developers.
3. Attending launch parties at Fry's.

WoW Wiki has some info they've posted up from some of our own prior posts on a bit about what we do. It doesn't cover all of it, but it may help.

Yeah, Wowwiki left off the bits where you are expected to find a cure for cancer and the bit where eyonix saves the world from Ming the Merciless.

:D

Gosh I am SOOO in a playful mood today, which is strange because I really don't feel very well overall...

We try not to discuss Eyonix's current mission against Ming. You know what happens to dissenters.
