Gamespy Interviews J. Allen Brack

Here's one more tidbit of WoTLK information for you, courtesy of Gamespy. They sat down for an interview with co-lead design J. Allen Brack. Most of the information is stuff we've heard in the past or have already posted on in this morning's massive flurry, but it's always nice to get a peek into the brain of the folks who bring us this amazing game.

Among some of the things discussed by J. Allen Brack and Gamespy:

  • Flying Mounts are gone until level 77, at which point you will either complete a quest or a visit a trainer to be able to use them again. You will still not be able to use the mounts in the old world, so even though Naxxramas is on Azeroth, your flying mount will not be able to cross back over the sea to visit the old stomping grounds. The Old World was designed using too many graphical shortcuts in places people were not meant to access to allow flying mounts.
  • They have recieved massive positive feedback so far about the return to Azeroth and the old traditional fantasy as opposed to the sci-fi feel of the Burning Crusade. In that same vein, they are bringing back many familiar sights and storylines from Old Azeroth. Sholozar Basin will be Un'goro 2.0, complete with crystals and pylons. No word on whether it will also contain more Land of the Lost and Nintendo references. It will also contain some of the flavors of Stranglethorn and the old Netherstorm biodomes, says J. Allen.
  • In a similar vein, we can expect to see more of the ever-popular Scarlet Crusade, this time in the form of the Scarlet Onslaught. The Worgen are back in homage to the Sons of Arugal and Shadowfang Keep.
  • While the city of Dalaran will be headed up to WoTLK, don't expect to see nothing but a hole in the ground where it used to be in Alterac. J. Allen reveals that they do have plans for the spot, and the concept drawings they have for it look very cool.
  • The Dragonblight, J. Allen Brack said, is probably his favorite new piece of content for the expansion. It is where the Dragons were born, where they recieved sentience from the Titans, and where they come to die, and where the Lich King has been twisting Dragon corpses to serve him as Frost Wyrms, so there's a lot of great lore and history there. It will include a raid instance called the Chamber of the Aspects, and while no bosses have been designed for it yet, it will probably have bosses representing each of the Dragonflights.

It sounds like the developers are nearly as excited about WoTLK as we are, which is usually a good sign of things to come. We hope you've enjoyed all this awesome new information we've found for you tonight. There may be more to come, so stay tuned as we scour all the latest news.

Gamespy has five new amazing videos everyone should check out. They include several sneak peaks of things we haven't seen before. They are the most detailed and rich in-game videos of WotLK to date. The videos cover the areas of Dragonblight, Zul'Drak, Sholazar Basin, Borean Tundra, and the Howling Fjord.

There are several first looks at the new cities, zones, and architecture of Wrath of the Lich King that we haven't seen from Blizzcon. This also includes several mobs that have not been seen before. Zul'Drak is reminiscent of Zul'Gurub, and looks quite new and refreshing. Sholazar Basin is a cross between Stranglethorn Vale and Ungoro Crater, heavily influenced by Troll architecture.

Here dense forests surround a vast arctic wasteland littered with the massive, gleaming bones of perished dragons. In the center of this frozen expanse lies Wyrmrest Keep, a structure believed to be built by the world-shaping titans shortly after Azeroth's creation. Many legends hold that the five great Dragon Aspects were blessed within this fortress and given their charge to watch over the budding world. Perhaps it is for this reason that dragons nearing the end of their lives come to the Dragonblight to enrich the land with their passing.

Surrounding Wyrmrest Keep are five majestic dragon shrines: red, bronze, green, blue, and black, each blessed with the powers of its respective flight. In recent times the undead Scourge has laid siege to these shrines in an effort to further its attempts at raising terrifying new variations of undead dragons to serve the Lich King.

In an attempt to arrest these invasions, the red Dragon Aspect, Alexstrasza, has begun recruiting heroes to aid in the fight against the Scourge, even as the taunka and tuskarr wage their own desperate battles against the undead. The one-time Scarlet Crusade, now the Scarlet Onslaught, has arrived as well in the hopes of claiming victory in their ongoing campaign against the Lich King and his minions.

For millennia the Great Dragonblight has served as the enduring heart of Northrend.

Both the Alliance and the Horde have begun establishing a presence in the Dragonblight, taking a particular interest in the barred entrance to Icecrown, Angrathar the Wrath Gate. There both factions have begun gearing up for the siege that will inevitably lead into the lair of the Lich King himself.

The immediate dangers of the Dragonblight are posed not only by the Lich King, however, but also by the blue dragonflight. Determined to manipulate all existing magic to serve his own purposes, the blue Dragon Aspect, Malygos, has ordered his flight to maneuver colossal machines into key positions over magical ley line clusters. Many believe that these dire constructs are intended to realign the paths of magical energy that course beneath the earth. If successful, Malygos's tampering could result in an ecological and magical catastrophe that would threaten not only the stability of Northrend, but ultimately the equilibrium of the entire world.

In an interview at Computer and Videogames, Tigole mostly discusses some things we've already heard about, such as the Lake Wintergrasp PvP zone and the process to unlock the Death Knight class, but also reveals a few very tasty little morsels of new information as well.

First, he tells us a little bit more about Blizzard's philosophy behind Inscription, the new trade skill slated to be released with the expansion. While it appears that only one inscription will be allowed to be on a spell at one time, their goal is not to create one or two all-powerful inscriptions that will be used above all others, but to give players a variety of valid choices as to how to modify their spells. The example he gives is that of Frost Nova. One player might choose an inscription that gave their nova a longer range, while another might choose one that would lengthen the duration of the root associated with it.

Know Your Lore: Arthas

Daldain wrote on 17th January 4pm

Arthas Menethil is a relatively new addition to the Warcraft Series -- he only appeared in Warcraft III and its expansion. Nevertheless, Arthas's impact on Azeroth is so profound that he remains one of the biggest names in WoW, even though he's never appeared in the game itself ... yet.

Who: Prince Arthas Menethil, Crown Prince of Lordaeron, Knight of the Silver Hand, and Lich King.

What: Human at first, kinda undead later.

History: Arthas was the son of King Terenas Menethil, ruler of Lordaeron. As a youth, he trained in the art of combat and joined the Silver Hand, a group of paladins. He became known for his exploits in battle. He also briefly dallied with a young mage named Jaina Proudmoore, but it didn't work out because long-distance things never end well. They decided to remain friends, which is as big a sign of impending doom as one can get.

Arthas and his trainer, Uther Lightbringer, were sent to the orc internment camps near Lordaeron to quell uprisings. Arthas defeated the orcs with the use of a magical fire weapon, but soon discovered that a plague of undeath was sweeping the northern villages of Lordaeron. The now-evil wizard Kel'Thuzad had transported the plague, originally the brainchild of the Lich King Ner'Zhul, to the towns of Brill and Stratholme through some infected grain. (Sorry for all the links to WoWWiki, but we're sort of joining the story in the middle here and all the names can get confusing.) Arthas and Jaina went on a totally platonic mission to stop the plague, which Arthas accomplished by killing Kel'Thuzad. Arthas then headed north to Stratholme to kill the demon Mal'Ganis.

Jeff Kaplan reveals how to get to Northrend

MMO Champion's got the rest of the details on that PC Zone interview we heard about yesterday-- Jeff Kaplan sat down with the French magazine and gave out some new hints about what we'll see up in Northrend in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
  • As we heard at BlizzCon, Northrend isn't all a snow-covered wasteland-- there are forests (including one full of Furbolgs) and other terrain types to find up there.
  • We've also heard this before, but it's worth repeating again: Arthas will play a much bigger part in the day-to-day Northrend than Illidan did-- lots of people, both raiders and casuals, will have a chance to "interact" with him.
  • Here's something new-- there will be two entry points, and previously we'd assumed that one would be for Horde and another would be for Alliance. But that's not the case-- instead, each of the zones (the Borean Tundra and the Howling Fjord) will have an entry point for each faction. So there will actually be four ways into the expansion.
  • Alliance get to choose a battle in the Howling Fjord or a massive stronghold (complete with a brand new faction leader) and a giant steamship
  • And Horde either go into the Forsaken's new lands (with new architecture-- we saw it at BlizzCon), or into Garrosh Hellscream's (son of Grom) Warsong Fortress.

Still nothing on the 2.4 today, but we've got a small update on WotLK from PCZone and a few interesting blue posts. ^^

Jeff Kaplan (Tigole) Interview in PC Zone
The latest issue of PC Zone (#190) was released with a small interview of Jeff Kaplan containing a few more information about the expansion, nothing really new but a few people asked for it by mail and more details are always welcome. In a few lines :
  • Northrend isn't just all snow, for example the Howling Fjord is completely green and modelled after the Redwood Forest while the Borean Tundra (2nd starting zone) has typical autmun colours.
  • Devs really feel they were too protective of Illidan and want players to interact with Arthas a lot more, you will talk to him, have moments with him, and you won't have to be a raider to see him. There is also the new CoT instance letting you "clean" Stratholme with him in the past.
  • There are four points of entry for Northrend (two for each side).
    • Howling Fjord
    • Alliance players will enter the zone by boat through the Fjord walls and arrive in the middle of a big battle. (Note : See Valgarde)
    • Horde players will arrive in an area with a brand new Forasken architecture with a nice "Tim Burton feel". (Note : See New Agamand)
    • Borean Tundra
    • Alliance players comes into a giant Alliance stronghold with a brand new leader that devs are currently building up, and a massive alliance steam ship. They plan to launch an expeditionary force to get to the Icecrown Citadel and defeat Arthas.
    • Horde players comes into the Warsong Fortress ruled by Garosh Hellscream, son of Grom Hellscream. The Warsong base is said to be "absolutely huge and epic".
That's all folks ! Thanks to Komodo/Valiance for the report, you can hug him on #mmo-champion on irc.quakenet.org (It's been a while since the last time I mentionned the channel, come, we've got cookies !)

Unfortunately, you have to buy the magazine today to get the entire interview. They have only released a snippet of it online to send us into a frenzy of anticipation. What we learn from this sneak peek is that the Northrend PvP zone, Lake Wintergrasp, will be about the size of Westfall and will be all PvP. No PvE objectives in it at all. It will also be a static zone, not instanced. He also mentions that it will have destructible buildings and siege weapons, which we knew from his Leipzig interviews. Not much new there other than the size comparison to Westfall.

The interview asks some pointed questions about the problems encountered with TBC and what Blizz might have learned from them. How about the daunting attunement and access difficulties that hardcore players encountered when they first loaded the expansion onto their computers? Kaplan points to how they realized that access to the instances needed to be tweaked and they did so with recent patches. Blizz would like to have world events that include the whole server again, much like Ahn'Qiraj (and I couldn't agree more, as long as the guild that opens the event doesn't do it on Monday morning like they did on Elune), and they are looking to avoid with Wrath what Kaplan "personally consider[s] a mistake in the Burning Crusade."

Alterac Valley Changes for Patch 2.3 (Source)

As a continuing part of our improvements, we will be implementing the following changes in the next patch.

Strategy can be an important element of any battleground. We want to emphasize this in Alterac Valley more and give players additional meaning to both defending and attacking. To push the strategic element of the battleground to the next level we have changed how players maintain their reinforcements or deprive the other team of theirs.

Each team will have a starting reinforcement count. Reinforcements can be lost in significant amounts if a tower is destroyed or if Captain Galvangar or Belinda Stonehearth is killed. For each team member death, an additional reinforcement will be lost. On the death of General Drek’Thar or Vanndar Stormpike, all reinforcements are lost and the team is defeated. At any point in time, if a team is reduced to zero reinforcements, the opposing team will win the battle. Defending your own teammates, towers, and key NPCs will be an important aspect of maintaining team resources and achieving victory in Alterac Valley.

Warmasters can be the boon or the bane of any team. They are an important element for the defense of your general or the defeat of the opposing general. Warlords and their general will be more closely linked in the next patch. Pulling one is a guarantee the other will come as well. Each team begins with four Warmasters. Destroying a tower will eliminate the associated Warmaster. Unlike the current game play, however, destroying the enemy tower will not add a Warmaster to your own side.

We will be changing the pace of the battle slightly with a reduction in the time needed to control a tower or graveyard. Where it currently takes five minutes to gain control, the time will be reduced to four minutes. The honor for capturing a tower will also be increased.

Graveyards can be an important resource for getting your teammates back into the battle more quickly. Currently, players can sometimes be sent to their starting tunnels far from the battlefront. This can often be an inconvenient location to respawn and more out of the way from the action than we would like, to correct this, players will instead respawn at a team-controlled graveyard. Should the team not have a graveyard under their control, they will respawn in the starting tunnel.

Death Knight "interview" and lore on official site

[Read All]

Eliah Hecht wrote on 1st October 1pm

The official Wrath page is slowly accreting information, which is good, because it started out pretty dang empty. The latest addition to it is an "interview" about the Death Knight class with the developers, along with a page on lore. I put "interview" in quotes because it doesn't feel like a real interview; it reads like an excuse for the devs to give the same information we already have. Which is fine and all, I just think "interview" is the wrong term for it. Here's a summary in my own words:
  • Why did you pick Death Knight for the new class?
They have a connection to Arthas and Northrend, and we needed more tanks. The playable DKs will be allied with the Horde or Alliance, fighting against Arthas.
  • What will adding another tanking class do to the group/raid game?
We want all tank classes to be equally good in general, so you can use any of them for a 5-man, but we want them to have distinct raiding roles. (They also took this opportunity to reiterate for the nth time that "hero class" doesn't mean it's more powerful than other classes, just more different.)
  • How is the DK different from other tanks?
No shield, powerful melee abilities, magic attacks. The devs are making sure they have the core tanking abilities of keeping aggro and mitigating damage, while still making the DK feel like its own thing.
  • Will we see some classic DK spells and abilities?
Yes, we're taking a lot from previous Warcraft material. One thing that will set them apart as a new class, but still tie them into WC3 DKs, is the rune system.

  • Part of the lore behind the Wrath of the Lich King expansion has Arthas trying to seduce players to the dark side, both Alliance and Horde.

  • On the Sunwell, it seems the Burning Legion is using the Mana Forges in Netherstorm to power the Sunwell and summon Kil'Jaeden. The instance will have 6-8 bosses, and Kil'Jaeden will not be fully summoned when you fight him (which is supposed to explain how 25 level 70s can drop him).
  • Dalaran will have one or two instanced dungeons in it (!), and will not have Auction Houses. It will have portals, including maybe one to Shattrath.
  • There's some good Death Knight info, including a new AoE spell called Death and Decay. Blood runes will be damage oriented, Unholy runes will be utility and DoTs, and Frost runes will be CC-ish abilities.
  • Finally, Inscription will give players the ability to sell scrolls (is it just me, or did the developers clearly say at BlizzCon that inscribers wouldn't sell scrolls?), and they will only be able to update "core spells"-- Priest's Mind Control no, Hunter Freeze Traps yes. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Death Knight - Image 1 While we're still waiting for an ETA for World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, curious players inquire about the announced additions in the new expansion. We found a good question in the WoW Forums, this time regarding the new hero class, the Death Knight.

Kifle from Scarlet Crusade wanted to know if Death Knight characters will be able to choose between fighting for Horde or Alliance. The player also asked whether the Death Knight is transferable in between realms. Blizzard poster Nethaera was on hand to answer the questions, though she wasn't really able to offer any new information at the moment (Wrath of the Lich King IS a work in progress.)

Northrend revisited: new Wrath of the Lich King screenshots surface - Image 1

Blizzard Entertainment's latest addition to the World of Warcraft is Wrath of the Lich King, the second official expansion to the highly regarded MMORPG. If The Burning Crusade set expansion-players against the fiery outskirts of the Outlands, this time around player's will have to don their winter gear and trek northward into the icy landscapes of Northrend. But it's not all ice and snow, as these screenshots show.

This land is not new to fans of the Warcraft franchise, for this was the same land the Human Expeditionary Fleet made landfall and discovered the cursed sword Frostmourne. 'Twas the same place where Prince Arthas met his inevitable conversion to the Scourge, and where some marooned humans still live today.

That much can also be said of the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion, which has just received a new update to its official website. Blizzard has posted the continuation of the plot behind this latest game expansion, with chapter 2 narrating the tragic tale of Arthas, the Paladin-turned-Death Knight who currently bears Frostmourne.

Yes players, Blizzard still isn't sure about when World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King will be out, but a plethora of CD retail sites all over the Internet have begun spinning their release date roulettes like crazy. And if they all weren't seriously misleading, they are all definitely worth a chuckle or two.

World of Warcraft has been more than just leisure for some, after Blizzard Entertainment's massively multiplayer (and successful) online RPG launched just a few years ago. Some gameplay styles of classic RPG-goers never grow old, and if you're one of those who loves to create an elaborate avatar collection, the news of a new hero class probably tripped an alarm inside your head.

The races of Northrend

[Read All]

WoW Insider Blog wrote on 8th August 6am

As we look toward the release of Wrath of the Lich King, there is so much we don't know, largely because the developers themselves aren't yet sure of things themselves. We do have a few tidbits of information, however, that can give us an idea of what it will be like to venture into Northrend. At Saturday's lore panel BlizzCon attendees got some information about the races we will be encountering in the frozen north. I took some notes as I listened intently, and this is what I came away with:
Taunka: A race of buffalo men, the Taunka are relatives of the Taurens, but are at odds with the passive Tauren philosophy regarding how they deal with the land. Where the Tauren live together with Nature, the Taunka bully the land around them into subservience. When a storm threatens their people, they beat the air elementals into submission until the threat passes. They are very much bullies of nature (no pun intended.)

Tuskarr
: Originally a developer's joke when they were placed into earlier Warcraft games, the Tuskarr are now a very real, very powerful race of noble nomadic fisherman.

Iron Dwarves: We do not know much about this race, other than they are tied to Ulduar, the dwarven creation myth, and are one of the few evil races of dwarves in Azeroth. They have a large role in one of the major plot lines to be told in WotLK.

Vrykul: Imagine 8-foot-tall vampiric vikings with a lust for blood and penchant for evil. The Vrykul are one of the first races you encounter as you step off the boat in Howling Fjord, and they are definitely not happy to have us invading their territory.

Nerubians: We are not told much about what might be left of Azjol-Nerub, but adventurers in Northrend will be investigating the former Nerubian homeland, but there are hints that at least some part of this ancient civilization remains.

Grizzlemaw Furbolgs: Grizzley Hills is homeland to this mysterious race of Furbolgs, although it is unclear if this is the original race of furbolgs, or another off-shoot.

07/08 Information about the Death Knight

Vaneras wrote 7th August 3am
This post is a summary of recently given information about the Death Knight:

There are a lot of things still being worked out with the Death Knight class such as specific spell abilities. Unlike a traditional caster type however, a Death Knight's spell power comes from runes that are etched into their blade. Think Warcraft III when you think about the possibilities of abilities for the Death Knight. I say possibilities because things are still in process for the development of the class and there will be (of course) a lot of testing for balance done. Given that this is our first Hero class we're unveiling, you can be sure we're going for the coolest of the cool for this class.

Runes and Mana pool

Q u o t e:
Is the Death Knight going to have a mana pool? The pictures from BlizzCon show spells using mana.

The runes they inscribe on their weapons are their mana pool (of a sort). As they use their abilities, the runes will be exhausted. After a period of time the runes will refresh. So, they don't have a traditional type of mana pool. You'll most likely see some screenshots of it, but the Death Knight (at current) has three different types of runes that they can inscribe on their weapon: Blood, Frost, and Unholy. Runes can only be inscribed out of combat ( all of this is subject to change as development continues.)

The rune types don't dictate a new damage type, they're simply a resource that spells and abilities will use when you activate them. The spells and abilities won't necessarily be "blood, unholy, or frost" damage.

Imagine it being three different energy pools which you can change the size of before you get into combat.

About weapons
There's no final decision or announcement on how multiple weapons would be etched, or how weapon switching may affect the etched runes. What has been discussed to some degree is that the main-hand weapon would be etched and that's it, but it's too early to say what would be allowed in the final game.

Which level?
Also, we haven't decided on what level you will start as your Death Knight, but it seems that it should be easy enough for someone who has leveled a character to level 80 and done the quest to be able to adapt to a Death Knight fairly well. It's not quite the same as handing it over to someone who is still learning the game. There are lots of opportunities for someone to solo and group to learn how to play the class.

Which race?
It's true that the current plan has been heavily discussed to go ahead with all races, but no final decision has been made. After talking to Chris he wasn't totally sold on the idea. Both are technically correct in that the current plan of some of the developers is to go ahead with all races, there's been no final decision made and no real work has progressed to force a decision just yet. The FAQ is more accurate at this time, in my opinion.

Lore-wise there's really no reason why a specific race couldn't become a Death Knight.

All races can be challenged mentally and physically, their will dulled, and be cast down into madness ... and darkness. Their souls drawn into the runeblade they wield.

Compared to other classes
They are not planned to be more powerful, them being a hero class simply means they're introduced at a higher level, and in general will reference the more powerful hero types of Warcraft history.

It's out intention to integrate them into the current classes, balance them appropriately, and have them provide an additional - but equal - role in groups and raids as compared to other classes.

Will there be other hero classes?
Yeah, well that kind figures in to the new definition of what a hero class is. It allows us to add new classes that start at higher levels, keeping players relatively kept up as we continue to release expansions and raise the level cap, and ultimately it really fits to use the heroes from past Warcraft games as inspiration. Some other hero classes could definitely be things like Demon Hunter, Blademaster, etc.

New WoW Boxes - 5th Disc

Q u o t e:

Can you please release the newer boxes (and the expansions) on DVDs?

DVD players have been out for a while now that there should be more of them then CDROM only computers.

Save us the disc swaps, please.

The Collector's Editions came with a DVD version, and there's actually some BC Collector's Editions left at the Fry's in Fountain Valley, CA. Probably not helpful to you, but what is probably helpful is information on how to create your own DVD!

Huzah!

Follow the second set of steps here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow/?id=aww01635p) to copy the contents of your CDs into a folder on your hard drive, and then simply burn the contents of that folder onto a DVD using your favorite software!
1. First, make a new folder on your desktop and name it something such as WoW Installer.
2. Display the disc contents by opening My Computer, right-click the CD, and choose Open.
3. Go to the Edit menu and choose Select all, so all the files are highlighted.
4. Go to the Edit menu and choose Copy.
5. Open the new folder you created on your desktop
6. Go to the Edit menu and choose Paste.
7. The files should copy from the CD to that folder.
8. Once this is complete, please put in the next install disk.
9. Open up the disk (using the process in step 2 above).
10. Select the file called Installer Tome with the number at the end.
11. Go to the Edit menu and choose Copy.
12. Open the new folder you created on your desktop
13. Go to the Edit menu and choose Paste.
14. The "Tome" file will copy over.

Repeat steps 8-14 to get the "Installer Tome" files off of the remaining installation disks.

The steps pretty much have you copy everything from the first CD, and then just the Installer Tome file from all subsequent discs.

Enjoy DVD awesomeness.

What we learned from BlizzCon

WoW Insider Blog wrote on 6th August 9am

Here it is-- a comprehensive, one-post guide to everything we learned at BlizzCon 2007. From Alleria to Zul'Aman, it's all here. Everything we know about Death Knights, Wrath of the Lich King, what's happening in Azeroth between now and the next expansion release, what Blizzard thinks about midlevel content, and how they're going to deal with the AFKers in Alterac.

From top to bottom, in alphabetical order, here's every single new thing WoW Insider learned (and confirmed-- no speculation here) in Anaheim this weekend. If you have questions or additions, add them below, and I'll either update the list, or answer them to the best of my knowledge. Enjoy.
-Alchemy
  • Change coming to daily Transmute cooldown-- will make it reset like a raid instance
  • Discoveries will be easier to get
-Alterac Valley
  • AFKers are a huge problem and "will be dealt with," "going to be dealt with," "We have plans for those people."
  • Players won't spawn in the cave until there is nowhere else to spawn
  • Players will report AFKers, and when enough reports have gone down, AFKers will get a debuff that only disappears when they enter combat. When they don't, they get another debuff that keeps them from gaining honor that BG.
  • Honor distribution will change-- more honor towards the end of the BG
  • Pulling mechanics will change-- no more solo Vandar Stormpike pull
  • Group queuing in AV will return
-Arena PvP
  • New arena and gear coming in Season 3
  • DoTs will be affected by resilience in 2.3
  • Map gimmicks (ie Cyclones) are a bad idea, no more of those
  • Rating requirement will be necessary to buy an arena weapon, so no more saving up points just for the weapon
  • Fear isn't overpowered in 5v5, though it may be in 3v3 and 2v2
-Arthas Menethil
  • Is not dead-- we may be able to separate him from the Lich King
  • We will have interaction with him the whole time in Northrend, as early as 70
  • Wants to turn players against the Alliance and the Horde just as he was turned against his own people
  • Sylvanas and/or Jaina will probably join the actual fight against him
  • Will do something really bad to Azeroth to send the Alliance and Horde after him
  • "Every player, raider, grouper, soloer will ultimately determine whether he is defeated or whether he takes over."
  • Arthas had a sister? She may come into play
-Battlegrounds
  • New BG coming in the expansion, will be 15v15 and take about 30-40 minutes to complete
  • Will include siege weapons, which are player-controlled and can destroy certain buildings
  • "Meat Wagons," "Ballistas," and "Catapults" are all listed as examples
  • No name announced yet
  • BGs are created as "Warcraft III meets Battlefield 1942"
  • Alterac Valley was originally non-instanced, as Lake Wintergrasp will be
  • Flag in EOTS was originally a 5th mobile objective
  • Considering making variable sizes of battlegrounds-- playing same BG as a 15v15 or a 20v20
  • Guild Battlegrounds are being considered, as well as a guild rating for each BG
-Cooking
  • Daily quests coming in 2.3
  • New recipes: Food that buffs melee and spell crit.
  • Shockcops-- like Dragonbreath Chili, but with lightning damage
-Death Knight
  • WoW's first Hero Class
  • Like an Anti-Paladin, can tank with 2h or dual wield (no shields)
  • Wears plate, likes bladed weapons (runeswords and runeaxes)
  • Will use a Rune resource system rather than Mana, Rage, or Energy-- choose six Blood, Frost, or Unholy runes out of combat that can be consumed for spells, or refreshed by spells and abilities
  • Will have their own mount and itemization
  • Will be Alliance and Horde, "unlocked" via a long quest at level 80, and that quest will supposedly explain how players can become Death Knights
  • Once unlocked, starts off at a higher level (55, 60, 70, not sure yet)
  • Spell: Army of the Dead: Summons ghouls. Not a pet class, but some abilities like that.
  • Available to all races
-Druids
  • Moonkin itemization will get better
  • Moonkin mana is being examined
  • Decurse and Cure Poison coming in Treeform
-Engineering
  • Will be able to craft a new flying machine
  • Going to "get some love"
  • Working on "reducing the selfishness" of the profession
-Enchanting
  • New enchant: Executioner. Occasionally ignore 840 of your opponent's armor. Power comparable to Mongoose.
-Hero Classes
  • Death Knight will be the only one in the new expansion
  • More are coming-- the idea is to put all WCIII Heroes in eventually
  • Will be a completely separate character-- the devs said players who upgraded their character felt they were losing something by doing so
  • Will start at a higher level and with "pretty good" gear
  • No additions to character slot numbers
-Hunters
  • Legendary ranged weapon coming
  • Hunters having to buy two arena weapons is a problem, and prices are being reconsidered
  • Hunter mana is being examined
  • Hunter arena representation is being examined for 2.3
-Inscription
  • New profession in WotLK
  • Inscribe spells and abilities with extra power (example: Fireball gets knockback or extra damage)
  • Create completely new items (not scrolls)
  • Another side of inscription that is not yet announced
-Jewelcrafting
  • Jewelcrafter only gems: +12 Spell Crit Y, +26 Healing R, +18 Stam B. Made from blue gems.
  • New recipe: Steady Talasite, +4 Resilience and +4 Stam Y/B. Meant to raise prices of Talasite on AH.
-Lake Wintergrasp
  • Non-instanced PvP zone in Northrend
  • Will have multiple objectives (like AV), siege weapons, and a persistent effect (like the Spirit Towers)
-Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain

As the world found out this last weekend via Blizzcon, there are some grand plans in store for World of Warcraft and Wrath of the Lich King. One of the many things that was mentioned was the creation of Engineering-based flying mounts. however earlier today we received an email from someone calling themselves "Blizguy" and claiming to have leaked information about the upcoming Engineering mounts that will be featured in Wrath of the Lich King. Since I love the idea that Engineering is going to finally get some much-needed love, we figured we'd pass along this rumor.

The claims are that the flying Gyrocopter will actually be a flying siege vehicle, much like the Dwarven Gyrocopters, Dwarvish Flying Machines and Gnomish Flying Machines from the original Warcraft RTS series. The rest of the rumor claims:
  • Will require the max level of Engineering.
  • Schematic will be obtained through a series of quests.
  • Is a flying siege weapon!
  • Will require level 78 to use. (Claims likely will be changed to 80.)
  • Will have durability like any other piece of gear, and will require occasional repairs.

First impressions: Wrath of the Lich King and Utgarde Keep

[Read All]

WoW Insider Blog wrote on 3rd August 7pm

I just got done playing through a quest in Northrend and up to the first boss of Utgarde Keep, and here's my general impressions of what I saw. Elizabeth was a little disappointed with what she saw this morning, but I grabbed a press pass and snuck into the press room here at BlizzCon (where playing time was relatively unlimited), and I feel I got a pretty good impression of the Howling Fjord zone, and the first 5-man we'll see in WotLK.

So what did I think? Click the link below to find out.
Howling Fjord

So of course before I headed out to BlizzCon, I uploaded my 70 Shaman onto the event realm server, and when I logged in on the event realm, there he was. I was standing on the Zepplin tower in front of Undercity, and a gigantic Murloc costume (specially placed for the event realm) told me to get on the Zepplin and go to Northrend.

Once there, I grabbed a few quests from the starting town, and decided to do one all the way through. "The New Plague" is the one I picked-- apparently the Forsaken had come up with their own plague, and they were trying to unleash it on the Scourge. But unfortunately, the Alliance had hijacked one of their ships, and I was to go to the ships, retrieve 10 plague containers, and return for a reward of around 8g. I headed south to see what I could find.

On the way there, I checked out the landscape-- the Fjord has basically two levels, a lower area where most of the towns are, and then lifts (up into large stone Dragonheads) that go up to the summit of the cliffs, high above the lower shores. It's a combination of Hinterlands and Nagrand, with the darker Autumn colors of Aszhara mixed in.

The other thing I noticed is that open war was going on all around me-- the Forsaken and the Alliance (I saw Humans and Dwarves but didn't see any Night Elves) were duking it out, and I passed through the Alliance camp, only aggroing the mobs when they decided to stop fighting each other. If I wanted to, it seemed like I could run through the battle untouched (much like that cave where the bog lords are fighting the Sporeggar in the southern part of Zangarmarsh). The other cool effect was that I heard the sounds of battle all around me, and Captains of both sides yelled commands back and forth-- I felt like I was in a living, breathing battle.

I made my way to the ship, where the Forsaken forces actually thinned out, and it was just me vs. Alliance, trying to clear a path to the containers. Since the event realm was so crowded, I had to beat a few other players to the containers (flashes of HFP after the BC release), but all in all, I liked the feel of it. Having Forsaken around fighting the Alliance made me feel like I was less alone against the mobs, even if I could waltz right through most of the battle because they were fighting each other.

I had to swim through the water to get to the ship, and I aggroed an "Orca," which looks like Free Willy with tusks. Also, I looted "Fresh Glacier Water" from the mobs (9180 mana over 30 seconds), and "Crusty Flatbread" (7800 health over 30 seconds). And you probably knew it was coming, but in the few minutes I'd been grinding, I'd picked up a stack of "Frostweave." Welcome to the new expansion, same as the old one.

Liveblogging the BlizzCon WoW Class Panel

[Read All]

WoW Insider Blog wrote on 3rd August 1pm

We're still live on the BlizzCon floor, and now we're liveblogging the WoW Class Panel after the break. Stay tuned for news about classes, talents, and everything you need to know about how Blizzard developed the class you chose for your character.
2:37 Rob Pardo says if you loved your class when WoW shipped, that's me. If you like them now, that's Tom.

Ranger class is now hunter. Some classes didn't make the cut originally like necromancer and blademaster.

First hero class: Deathknight.

2:39 Concentrating Coolness

Why paladins added to horde and shamans to alliance -- classes were coming closer together so they made the switch. Now the hated classes are on the opposing sides.

2:40 Deathknight system incorporates new resource system.

More classes aren't always better.

Balance Criteria:

All classes should be able to solo to max level

Every class should have a role in a 5 person group

Every class should have an important role in a raid

Every class should be competitive in PvP, but not be equal to another class in one on one PvP. Every class should have a spot in a 5v5 situation.

Most importantly, every class should be fun! (yes!)

For example, Warriors used to only press taunts in groups, but now changed for more fun.

2:45pm Tom Chilton

Purpose of talent system is to differentiate character.

Talent System Development

Apparent for need for customization.

Buying talent UI used to be more like buying skills from a trainer.

Class Balance

Alternate talent/gear specs... making them playable (e.g. Shadow Priest, Protection Paladin, Feral Druid)

They've emphasized getting gear for the different talent specs.

Gear contribution for HoT and DoTs.

Gear used to have more offensive stats, but now they've increased the return of investing in stamina and now added resilience.

General Class Philosophy

Raid, solo, group and PVP -- should be viable for all

Shouldn't have significantly different rules for spells in PVP vs PVE. It should be more cohesive.

2:50pm Not every talent will be optiized for every aspect of the game. Should have to make tough choices about your talent spec.

Talents shouldn't pigeonhole you too much to one specific activity.

Balance is ever-changing, even without changes to the game. What used to be overpowering, over time lessens when people find strategies to counteract. So they try not to have "knee-jerk" reactions.

Beware of shocks to the system. Not everyone nerds out on the forums. Don't want people to log in and feel like they are playing a completely different character.
